Inertial sensors: leading companies?

Learing inertial sensor companies are screened in this data-file, capturing 25 producers of inertial measurement units, accelerometers, gyroscopes and other MEMS sensors, as well as the price, performance and technical parameters of underlying IMU products.

Inertial sensors are used in consumer electronics, aerospace, defense, vehicles, robots and drones. They tell a device how fast it is moving, how far it has moved, and in which direction.

Inertial sensor companies are screened in this data-file. We estimate the market for Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) has surpassed $30bn pa in 2026, and 25 companies control over 70% of the market.

The top five inertial sensor companies have 45% market share, which makes the space moderately concentrated.

However most IMU companies have diversified product offerings, with <10% exposure to IMUs overall. Some have tens of thousands of separate SKUs.

Nevertheless, we can pick out the ‘top three’ inertial sensor companies for electronics applications (e.g., Bosch Sensortec), and a further ‘top three’ for high-end tactical grade IMUs (e.g., Honeywell Aerospace).

In each case, we note company size and scale, its exposure to inertial sensing, acquisitions, manufacturing facility expansions, and noteworthy recent news.

An overview of different inertial measurement units is also given, noting each unit’s price ($), weight (grams), size (mm3), power consumption (mW) and accuracy, as quantified by instability bias (both on the gyroscope and the accelerometer).

Robots and drones could use either high-grade fiber optical gyroscopes or MEMS-based IMUs. Specific units that have been selected for specific applications are shown in the ‘Use Cases’ tab of the data-file.

Thales agreed to acquire the Gorgรฉ family’s 35.5% stake Exail Technologies for โ‚ฌ3.9bn (enterprise value) in July-2026. We noted this transaction, as we wrote about Exail’s fiber optic gyroscopes repeatedly in early-2025.
